 Portugal’s players that are disputing the European Team Championships, wasted the last chance to get the maintenance at Championships Division, after losing with Poland by 3-1. Marcos Freitas (87) started the match against the experienced Asian player Wang Zeng, World’s number 81 but was defeated in four games (11-6, 6-11, 11-8, 13-11). João Monteiro (60) lost both matches he played in four games, against Jakub Kosowski (no.140) 12-10, 4-11, 11-6, 11-5, and with Wang Zeng 5-11, 11-5, 12-10, 11-9. The point of this meeting was obtained through Tiago Apolónia (97), which overthrew Daniel Gorak (no.120) in straight games, with the margins of 8-11, 4-11, 6-11. With this result our Selection will play for the 15th/16th with Slovakia, tomorrow at 1:00 pm (local time). The opponent team will align with Thomas Keinath ranked no. 88, Peter Sereda (no. 116), Lubomir Pistej (no. 122) and Michal Bardon (no. 186). |

Portugal Loses and will face Poland |

 Portugal’s Mens Table Tennis team, which is disputing the Championships Division at the European Championships, ended 3:0 to France. Tiago Apolónia (97) started the match facing the highly France’s player Christophe Legout World’s number 55 but lost in four games (11-3, 11-8, 4-11, 11-4). In the two following matches, João Monteiro and Marcos Freitas lost narrowly 3-2, after double match point. João was defeated by Emmanuel Lebesson with the margins of 13-11, 11-9, 3-11, 10-12, 14-12, whilst Marcos lost to Abdel-Kader Salifou with the margins of 11-6, 12-10, 7-11, 10-12, 12-10. With this result Portugal will face today the strong Poland’s team at 7.00 pm. The opponent team will align with Lucjan Blaszczyk, World's number 46, Wang Zeng Yi ( no. 81), Daniel Gorak (no. 102) and Jakub Kosowski (no. 140). |

Portugal Will Fight for a place between 9th AND 16th |

 Portugal lost today with Greece by 3-2, in the Liebherr European Championships, an event that takes place in the city of St. Petersburg in Russia. João Monteiro (60) defeated Konstantinos Papageorgiou (172) in three straigh games, while in the second game he lost to Panagiotis Gion (55) in three games. Tiago Apolónia (97) overcome Ntaniel Tsiokas (120) in five games, and Marcos Freitas (87) was defeated by Panagiotis Gion (55) in five and in four games against Konstantinos Papageorgiou. It should be noted that Portugal had a good performance, since they lost the two matches by 3-2, which shows that was very balanced, and the team they defeated was the winner of the Group. With this result Portugal went to the fourth place in the Group D at championships Division, and tomorrow Monday 6th October at 1:00pm, our selection will face the France’s team, in the fight for a place between 9 to 16. In the Euros 2007 in Belgrade, Portugal won a brilliant 13th place. France will play with Christophe Legout (ranked no. 52 of World Ranking), Emmanuel Lebesson (no. 137 of WR), Adrien Mattenet (no. 193 of WR) and Abdel-Kader Salifou (no. 256 of WR). |

 Portugal won today Belgium’s team by 3-1, in the 2008 Liebherr European Table Tennis Championships, an event that takes place in the city of St. Petersburg in Russia, until 7th October. João Monteiro (60), in good shape, fought and won Jean-Michael Saive (26) in straight games with the margins of 12-10, 11-1, 14-12, whilst Tiago Apolónia (97) was defeated by Yannick Vostes (246) in three games (7 - 11, 7-11, 9-11). Marcos Freitas (87) put Portugal leading the match, after beating Martin Bratanov (173) in four games (6-11, 13-11, 11-6, 11-9), and João Monteiro closed the meeting defeating Yannick Vostes in three straight games (11-5, 11-9, 11-3). With this victorie Portugal occupies the 2nd place in the Group D. Tomorrow Sunday 5th October at 4:00 pm, Portugal will face the powerful team from Greece, which consists of Kalinikos Kreanga current ranked no. 17 on the ITTF men’s World Ranking list, Panagiotis Gionis ranked no. 55, Ntaniel Tsiokas ranked no. 120 and Konstantinos Papageorgiou ranked no. 172. |

 Portugal lost today Saturday their first match against Romania by 3-2, in the Liebherr European Men’s Teams Championship, an event that takes place in the city of St. Petersburg in Russia. João Monteiro started well and won Andrei Filimon in three straigh games, whilst Marcos Freitas and Tiago Apolónia were defeated by Adrian Crisan and Constantin Cioti, in three and five games respectively. In the second match João Monteiro was unbeaten and won again, this time against his ex-team’s colleague Adrian Crisan in five games. In the decisive game, Marcos Freitas lost the match in a hard five games duel to Andrei Filimon, losing 12-14 in the fifth game of the fifth match, closing the meeting with a defeat. |

Portugal Will Confront Romania and Belgium |

 Are already known the teams that Portugal will face on Saturday, October 4, in the 2008 Liebherr European Championships, an event that begins tomorrow in the city of St. Petersburg in Russia. At 1:00 pm Portugal will face Romania, while at 7.00 it’s time to face Belgium. Portugal will play with the three Olympics, Marcos Freitas ranked no. 87 on the current ITTF Men’s World Ranking list, Tiago Apolónia ranked no. 97, João Monteiro ranked no. 60 and Énio Mendes ranked no. 313, guided by the national coach Ricardo Faria. It should be noted that the president António Almeida will lead the Portuguese delegation, together with Fernando Gomes and Rui Pimenta (physiotherapist). Carlos Paraíso was also invited by ETTU to participate in this important event. Romania's team will play with Adrian Crisan current ranked no. 22 at World Ranking, Andrei Filimon (74), Constantin Cioti (92), Ovidiu Ionescu (516) and Adrian Dodean (452). In turn, Belgium’s team will align with Jean-Michel Saive (26), Martin Bratanov (173), Yannick Vostes (246), Benjamin Rogiers (344) and Kilomo Vitta (458). On Sunday, 5th October at 4:00 pm, Portugal will measure forces with Greece’s team. At Euros 2007 in Belgrade, Portugal won the 13th position, among 35 nations, which is the best ever. |
