Three meetings, three wins and again they upset the pecking order. Portugal’s Marcos Freitas and Croatia’s Andrej Gacina were in harmony in the opening round of the Men’s Doubles event at the Qatar Open on Friday 11th February 2011. They beat to top seeds Singapore’s Gao Ning and Yang Zi to cause an upset in the opening exchanges in the third day of action in the Qatar Sports Club. The European duo won 11-4, 15-13, 11-6. One year earlier, they had achieved exactly the same feat. In the opening round of the Men’s Doubles event at the 2010 Qatar Open they beat Gao Ning and Yang Zi, on that occasion the no.2 seeds, before accounting for Japan’s Kazuhiro Chan and Kenji Matsudaira. The semi-finals proved the end of the road but they lost with honour; they extended the champions elect, China’s Ma Lin and Wang Hao, to six games. A new partnership had been born and at the German Open in Berlin, one month later, they repeated their success against Gao Ning and Yang Zi. Certainly the combination of the fast attacking play of the left handed Marcos Freitas and the right handed powerhouse Andrej Gacina is quite ideal. Against Gao Ning and Yang Zi it’s always tough; Yang Zi is clever, Gao Ning is safe, good in the rallies, good with the block and they are the no.1 seeds. The no.1 seeds but in Qatar they had to give second best to Marcos Freitas and Andrej Gacina. Not only did Andrej Gacina and Marcos Freitas repeat the success of one year ago, so did the Austrian partnership of Robert Gardos and Daniel Habesohn and they will face each other tomorrow Saturday 12th February at 10:45 AM.
In the Men’s Singles competition Portugal’s Marcos Freitas defeat Croatia’s Roko Tosic with 4-3. In the afternoon the Portuguese lost to the experienced player from Koreia’s Oh Sang Eun world ranking number 13 with 1-4 and was moved away. awaycompetition.
