Croatia and Portugal in Unison at Polish Open

Published 14 November, 2010

Portugal’s 22 year old Marcos Freitas a player from Ochsenhaüsen and sponsored by TIBHAR, in partnership with Croatia’s 26 year old Andrej Gacina donned the Men’s Doubles crown at the Polish Open in Warsaw on Sunday 14th November 2010. Seeded no.6, they overcame the Czech Republic pairing of Antonin Gavlas and Petr Korbel, seeded no.4, in the final to collect their first ever ITTF Pro Tour Men’s Doubles title as a partnership. They overcame the duo from the Czech Republic 11-5, 11-7, 9-11, 11-6, 11-8. Both partnerships formed the classic combination, the left handed attacking player in harness with the right hander of similar ilk. All four are players on duty are in the European mould of being topspin players who are at their best, at what is often referred to as “half distance”, a position where they have the opportunity to unleash strong attacks. However, there are differences, the left handers Marcos Freitas and Antonin Gavlas arguably are the players who realy more on controlled topspin play than power, whilst Andrej Gacina and Petr Korbel are to some extent the reverse. They are power players. Both partnerships have shown their qualities on the ITTF Pro Tour in recent times but neither pairs had ever progressed to a final. Antonin Gavlas and Petr Korbel had reached the quarter-final stage in Poland in 2008 and in 2009 had gone one stage better by reaching the semi-finals,  whilst in the same year they had reached the round of the last eight pairs in Denmark, Qatar, Germany and at the ITTF Pro Tour Finals earlier this year in Macau. Equally, Marcos Freitas and Antonin Gavlas had proved more than worthy opponents but a place in a final had proved elusive. Earlier this year they had reached the semi-final stage at the Qatar Open and at the German Open. In Warsaw, they went one step higher but could not climb the highest step. The top step was reserved for Marcos Freitas and Andrej Gacina.

Final

  • Marcos Freitas (POR) / Andrej Gacina (HRV) VS Antonin Gavlas / Petr Korbel (CZE) 4:1 (5-11, 7-11, 11-9, 6-11, 8-11)

Polish Open – Marcos Freitas and Andrej Gacina in the Final assured place in Seoul

Published 13 November, 2010

Places in the ITTF Pro Tour Grand Finals to be staged in the Korean city of Seoul were no doubt very much in the mind of the players in the Men’s and Women’s Doubles events at the Polish Open in Warsaw on Saturday 13th November 2010. Meanwhile, in the Men’s Doubles event by progressing to the final, the pairing of Portugal’s Marcos Freitas and Croatia’s Andrej Gacina has assured they will receive an invitation to the ITTF Pro Tour Grand Finals. Also, Marcos Freitas has played a part in possibly ending the hopes that his compatriots Tiago Apolónia and João Monteiro may have harboured of gaining an invitation to Seoul. In Warsaw, the pair Marcos Freitas ranked 60 and Andrej Gacina ranked 66, beat the second seeded French pairing of Emmanuel Lebesson and Adrien Mattenet at the quarter-final stage and in so doing dashed the latter duos hopes of a place in Seoul, before accounting for the Portuguese partnership of Tiago Apolónia and João Monteiro, the no.5 seeds. Defeat and desperation for the Portuguese pair, they now slip one place below the qualification line as a result of the efforts of the Czech Republic partnership of Antonin Gavlas and Petr Korbel. They have now amassed sufficient points and played in sufficient events to qualify for Seoul. The Final of the Men’s Doubles event will see tomorrow Sunday Antonin Gavlas and Petr Korbel face Marcos Freitas and Andrej Gacina.
